Bike Tour Winter 2003

Bicycle Tour led by me in Cuba in Winter 2003. This is my fourth time in Cuba leading a tour myself. I went to places I did before and also Veradero beach, Sancti Spirutus, Santo Domingo, Topo de las Callantes, Trinidad and Colon. Note, you have to scroll down to see the pictures at the bottom. Some of the captions are quite long. Thank you!

5 January 2003: Santa Clara to Sancti Spiritus 90 km The weather was nice and overcast again today 70 degree Farenheit. The terrain was a little hilly but not bad. We sawa lot of agricultural fields and very small towns. We went to the ice cream factory Pertuczida in Placetas, where they make the ice cream I had in Santa Clara, but unfortunately it was closed. I met a couple in their 70's touring from the Netherlands with fully loaded bikes ( at least 50 percent more than I was carrying in my four panniers). Two of my panniers were clothes and bike tools. The front two panniers were filled with food. I actually had 2 pounds of dried fruit left over at the end of the trip. The couple was going 129 km so they could only talk to me for five minutes they were in a hurry. The Dutch know how to vacation. Our group was lazy, we never went more than 90 km in a day ( or we just like to see the sights slowly and taste all the flowers). I popped some strawberry sugar bars in my mouth from Saudia Arabia that I bought at a dollar store. They got me through the last 30 km along with a tailwind and quite some downhill. We are staying in the luxurious Rancho Hatuey. We just went for a nice swim at the pool. The place is 4 km outside of Sancti Spiritus on a hill so the air is wonderful to breathe. No diesel fumes. We are about to have a nice dinner. After dinner Ray and I immediately fell asleep with all our clothes on after just lying in our beds. We proceeded to take turns then 'sawing logs through the night' as we often do. It is so nice to feel so tired just from biking and not from the heat. Today we did 90 km.

I will have future pics here for more travelogues in the future.
